A field guide
to looking.
An atlas is more than its coordinates. These notes offer a few ways to read the plates and make a route of your own.
Find the interruption.
A mostly gold composition makes a small ruby feel decisive. The red shape does not need to be the biggest object to become a focal point. In the Regalia Chart, begin at a ruby and follow the surrounding gold leaves outwards. Then start at the edge of the crown and notice how quickly the same stone draws you back.
Try a simple comparison: look at the plate for five seconds, look away, and name the first three shapes you remember. Those shapes reveal the image’s hierarchy.
Let a line become a route.
In the Gold Current, coins overlap into a continuous path. Individual objects matter, but their collective direction matters more. A chain works in a similar way: each link is complete, yet the eye reads the sequence as one line.
Compare this flowing motion with the Ruby Meridian. Its repeated links descend towards a pendant, while the coins wander across a wider field. Neither arrangement is a real map; both can help you think about visual navigation.
Read near. Read far.
The engravings use tiny lines to suggest volume, material and shadow. At a distance, those marks merge into larger shapes. Up close, their rhythm becomes visible. Use the enlarge control to compare a gem facet with a patch of ornamental gold.
These are original digitally created artworks in an engraving idiom. They are not scans of historical prints or photographs of real jewels. Their value here is imaginative: they give the looking exercises a rich, detailed world.
